Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the participation of Jews in the local government of the city of Kraków. It presents the historical context of this activity, reviewing both the powers of local government during Poland’s partitions and the government policy toward local government in the Second Republic. The author analyses the ways in which the councillors were elected and presents the milieus that were represented by the Jews on the Council. Light is shed on the shifts in the representativeness of Jewish councillors caused by the democratization of election regulations and the ethnicization of urban politics. Using the debate about “third vice-presidency” as an example, the author traces back the policy of cooperation and alliances on the town council forum. She also looks at the interdependencies between the evolution in town-level local government and similar interdependencies at higher tiers of administration and the evolution of the situation in the Kraków religious self-government.
