Summary/Abstract: The article looks at the question of the situation of the Jewish population of Lvov and Przemyśl during the Russian occupation of Austrian Galicia. The source materials are the texts of memoirs of Austrian subjects living in Przemyśl and Lvov and the reminiscences of Szymon An-ski, a Jewish writer from Russia. The fate of the Jewish population was presented both during the hard times of the siege of Przemyśl Fortress and after the seizure of the said land by the Tsar’s army. The author also mentions the support granted to the Rifle Association and the Polish Legions by the Lvov kehillah. The most important part of the work concerns Jewish life in Russian-occupied Lvov and Przemyśl. In addition to a description of a pogrom staged by Russian soldiers, the article presents the anti-Semitic policy of the Russian Empire, consisting, for example, in deportations of the Jewish population from Przemyśl and significant suppression of religious and cultural life of that community. Another topic reviewed was the participation of Jewish representatives in an ethnically mixed delegation of hostages – representatives of Lvov’s elite circles, aimed at ensuring security during a march-past of Tsarist units across Lvov after its capture. Due to the nature of the sources, the work is accompanied by comments by the authors of the diaries, their reflections on Jewish fate, gossip and urban legends doing rounds among Jews or connected with pogroms, the Jews’ role in intelligence, their loyalty or otherwise toward Austria-Hungary.
