Summary/Abstract: This article concerns overlapping talk in Finnish and Estonian conversation using conversation analysis as its method. It mainly focuses on the content of the overlapping turns and their functions in interaction. The research reveals that like the activities of the parties of interaction in general, almost all of the overlapping talk is collaborative in nature and does not normally disturb the smoothness of turn-taking. Three types of collaborative overlapping talk are introduced in the article: agreement displays, repair initiatives and assistance with word search.
