Summary/Abstract: The Hungarian composer and piano player Barnabás Dukay and the guitarist Gábor Gadó have been playing together only for a few years. Their performances are not only exceptional because they play the rare genre of free improvisation, but also because they combine classical skills with the jazz tradition without following any of the cross-over trends. While Gadó uses the same musical language both when composing and when improvising, Dukay's compositions greatly differ from his improvisational style. Discussing the contrast between the traditional concept of playing music and the post-Enlightenment music pedagogy, the essay makes an attempt to determine the existential venture of free improvisation.
