Summary/Abstract: My intention is to try to explain why the products of the South Slavic Muslim art of singing traditional epic songs (henceforth: Bosniac epics) were collected in the way they were throughout history; where, from whom, and how the songs were taken down; how they were edited and published; and for what reason. It is my hope that a close look at the four main published collections of this epic poetry may provide a clear answer to the question posed and may lead to a solution of a contemporary issue: how it should be done today. My subject is thus how the traditional art of Bosniac epic singing has been represented by its collectors.
