Summary/Abstract: The main task of the European Commission is to ensure that companies and member countries follow the rules of European Competition Policy. These are the rules of fair trade in goods and services. The Commission thus enables governments to get involved in case the market does not meet needs of consumers or businesses. The main areas of European Competition Policy are: 1) Antimonopoly and the Fight against Cartels 2) Merger Control, 3) Liberalization and 4) State Aid Policy. Its aim is to develop effective competition in the common market, to protect consumer welfare, to contribute to economic development and to stronger business productivity, as well as to contribute to the competitiveness of European economy. In addition to detailed analysis of European Competition Policy characteristics, the paper portraits its sources in detail as well. Further more, it deals with the history of European Competition Policy development through five key stages, concluding that its path is characterized by gradual interchange of institutional activism and passivism.
