New Approaches on Writing History Textbooks

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this research is to examine and evaluate new ap-proaches on writing history textbooks in the light of the recent devel-opments that took place in the developed world and to make recom-mendations for Turkish history textbooks. The research was conduct-ed in 2011, which included examination of national and international literature concerning history textbooks writing processes. In the light of the given data, the following factors were revealed as having effect on writing history textbooks: Changes in presentation of historical factual knowledge, historical thinking skills, constructivist approach in the teaching of history, gender, controversial issues, democracy and developments in human rights. Examining the Turkish history text-books in the light of the above factors, it can be said that there are important drawbacks in the Turkish history textbooks. To increase qual-ity of the Turkish history textbooks in Turkey, the above factors should be taken into consideration in writing history textbooks.
