Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to discuss various computer tools that are used for translation including a wide variety of CAT (computer aided translation) tools. First of all, the development and function as well as the application of the CAT tools, such as data capture tools, translation memories, terminology management systems, localization and Web page translation tools, diagnostic tools and corpus analysis tools, are presented in the paper. Secondly, a survey has been carried out, which has been aimed to find out the spread of different computer tools among translators in Lithuania, as well as their opinion about the benefit received from the tools in the process of translation. The results of the survey have shown that the versatile computer tools are very popular among Lithuanian translators. Although in general the more specialized CAT tools are not so frequently used by the respondents, it turned out that more experienced translators tend to use them in their work. Having evaluated the trends of CAT tools development and spread, the future of these tools seems to be quite positive: the increasing amount and variety of the texts to be translated promote the necessity to develop and use more and more sophisticated computer tools for translation.
