Summary/Abstract: When the trust and openness one reads about in Norwegian crime fiction was violated by the attacks of 22 July 2011, the country had to suddenly face a real crime. The surprising disappointment of Norwegians in Breivik’s Norwegianess, paradoxically, has the same source as the history of crime novels. The birth of crime fiction reflects the radical social changes that took place alongside the birth of the modern city. The foreignness of its inhabitants and the lack of control over their actions forced the creation of efficient regulatory tools that would isolate society from threats and aberrations. The crime novel enables the public to conduct a routine search for the presence of evil and madness, and above all, it teaches us that evil is always somewhere else than in us, both in life and in fiction.
