Scandinavia, Not Just for An Enjoyable Read

Summary/Abstract: We talked with two researchers who work in the Department of Scandinavian Studies at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Based on the personal experience they have acquired during numerous stays in Denmark and Sweden, they attempt to answer the question of who is an ‘outsider’ in these countries and what are ‘Scandinavia’s fears.’ Important references include the Breivik affair and Bronisław Świderski’s essay on the subject. A second, parallel topic discussed is Scandinavian crime novels – to what extent are they a critique of society, and to what extend do they open the door to simple explanations for evil/sickness and interpersonal antagonisms.
