Summary/Abstract: In his “Lectures on General Psychology” (1910/11), D. Michaltschew undertakes a critical analysis of the famous psychophysical law of Weber – Fechner. The aim of his analysis is to show that the law could be proven true only if one assumes that the intensity of sensations is measurable. And insofar this is a wrong assumption, Michaltschew states, the law which is built on it is unsound. This paper reveals the fallacy underlying the argument of Michaltschew: the Weber – Fechner law does not build on the assumption that the intensity of sensations is measurable directly; the law is derivable from empirical measurements of the change of the intensity of the physical stimuli which invokes a distinguishable change in the sensations caused by these stimuli.
