Summary/Abstract: Not only did the well-known Swiss playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt construct his entire theatrical thinking on the idea of the pre-eminence of the stage in the dramatical work, but he also put his theories into practice, first at the Basel theatre (1968-1969) and then at the Schauspielhaus Zürich (1970-1974), where he adapted and staged Urfaust by Goethe, Woyzeck by Büchner and Emilia Galotti by Lessing. The present article aims to briefly discuss the three adaptations in order not only to fill a gap in the research conducted so far on Dürrenmatt’s activity as theatre practitioner but also to bring to light the guidelines of his stage thinking.
