Summary/Abstract: This work gives an analysis the nature of national symbols (flagand coat-of-arms) in the countries of former Yugoslavia (Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and former Soviet Union (Belarus, Russia), and the influence of these symbols on the development o fnationa lconsciousness and patriotism in these countries. The paper also analyzes how the choice of these symbols depended on the relations with other countries, as well as the relations among ethnic and ideological groups of population within the countries.
