Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the decline of the Quebec separatist movement which has been eroding for more than 10 years. This development can be documented by both the decline of support for the idea of independent Quebec in the polls conducted in this period and decline of major political parties, whose main goal was declaration of Quebec sovereignty. The article is based upon the argument that secession is difficult in well-established democracies. With reference to the analytical framework of Stéphane Dion, the author analyzes the lessons from Quebec since last referendum on independence in the mid 1990s. The analysis mainly focuses on three dimensions of nationalism: cultural distinctiveness, economic and educational skills and political power. Reforms of Canadian federalism in all of these levels, which have been introduced by the government in Ottawa, make it very unlikely that Quebec politicians can achieve their goals in the short or midterm horizon.
