Summary/Abstract: Knowledge from various sources is currently more extensively and boldly used to design and carry out surveys. Formerly additional information acted as a modest supplement to the sampled responses whereas nowadays it governs the choice of a sampling design per se and helps rectify elicited findings while extrapolating answers to the whole population. It seems that acquisition and advancement of knowledge about populations of concern assisted by state-of-the-art data processing will subsequently lead to permeation of both sampling designs or even gradual substitution of random sampling by non-probability sampling. Hence the growing importance of information beyond samples.
