Summary/Abstract: "The Czech Republic’s biggest post-1989 handicap is its narcissistic president". In this issue, New Presence publisher Martin Jan Stránský and political scientist Jiří Pehe assess the performance of Václav Klaus as president, and try to analyze the motivating forces that drive this deeply controversial and complex figure. Both Stránský and Pehe note that the period of “normalization” which followed the Soviet occupation of 1968 undoubtedly had a lasting impact on Klaus’s character and political “philosophy”. Indeed few Czechs over the age of 30 were not affected by this grim episode in recent history whose repercussions are still being felt today.
