Summary/Abstract: Classification of words into the word classes works mostly with three criteria: morphologic, semantic and syntactic. Corpus-driven approach offers another (so far largely neglected) perspective, namely the question of context and words’ combinability. If the statement that a (lexical) meaning is recognised only in the context is valid, we may assume as well that a  (proto)meaning or an (invariant) function of the word class is identified according to what the word-group combines with. On the statistical analysis of contexts a proposal of the new interpretation of word class system is built, in which the numerals may be omitted as a separate word class. In the paper I outline the possibilities of such an approach and also point out some possible difficulties associated with implementing this new perspective into a handbook intended for the general public (here I draw from my experience with the preparation of Mluvnice současné češtiny).
