Summary/Abstract: The article compares the role of gradation in Finnish and Estonian. In Estonian the contrast of alternating grades is a way of expressing morphological categories, whereas in it can be mostly predicted from the phonological structure. In remaining cases the connections with the morphological category and certain paradigm types can be found also in Finnish.
