Balkan Parallels in Folk Astronyms: 3. Calling the Morning and Evening Venus with а Male and Female Names

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with calling morning and evening Venus with а male or female personal name (Bulgarian Stana and Milyo/Miho; Milan and Militsa; Yankul and Yaninka; Greek Yanos/Yanakis, Yanis and Maro/Marua, Margitsa), а tradition typical of Greeks and Bulgarians. It also discusses the related folklore texts of different genres: Bulgarian legends, ballads and Greek legends, songs, proverbs, tales. This type of astronyms and the related folklore texts are met in the southern part of Greek territory and in the south-southwest of the Bulgarian ethnic domain. The astronyms and texts mentioned originate from one and the same myth about twin brother and sister who committed incest and were turned therefore into two stars – one in the east and the other in the west sky, so they could never meet again. The myth has been preserved differently among Greeks and Bulgarians: Greek texts seem to be fragments which find their missing parts in Bulgarian legends and ballads. The analysis allows the conclusion that Bulgarian folk astronyms based on а male or female personal name and the legends related have appeared under Greek influence.
