TUDOR ARGHEZI, TWO STEPPES – AN INTERPRETATION

Summary/Abstract: The poem “Two Steppes” by Tudor Arghezi was included in the volume “Rhythms”, issued in 1966, one year before the poet’s death. I believe it is one of the greatest poems of Romanian poetry, one of the poems that are memorable through concentration, depth, expressiveness and lyrical freshness guarded in and over time, such “Midnight Is Being Struck…” by Mihai Eminescu, “Mode” by Ion Barbu, “Lacustre” by George Bacovia, “Andante” by Lucian Blaga, “Song” (“Only this Moment Has Memories”) by Nichita Stanescu, “The Rope-Man” by Gellu Naum, and others. It is born of the poet’s main background of obsessions and visions, and is close, very close, to the 1959 poem “Steppes”, which must be read in parallel with it. It is a visionary, philosophical and emotionally and lyrically shattering.
