Summary/Abstract: ’Lantos’ Sebestyén Tinódi (between 1505 and 1510–1556 Sárvár) was one of the most impressive Hungarian minstrels of the 16th century. Supposedly he was attending one of the chapter schools in Pécs. Numerous elements of his poetry refer to the fact that he was in possession of a literate education. His acrostics inform us about his Latin language knowledge. He drafted his chronicle about King Sigismund on the basis of János Thuróczy and Bonfini’s description. Virgil was among his readings. In his works the same rhetorical rules, configurations can be observed that were applied by the author of the Funeral Sermon (Halotti Beszéd), which was put down between 1192-95. Finding out the genetic relations between the Funeral Sermon, historical songs in the 16th century, laments of heroes, and funeral orations in the 17th-18th century, can take us closer to understanding the origin of not just the successor genres but to the predecessor genres, too.
