Summary/Abstract: Initiated by Max Weber and Hans Küng but developed by Hans Jonas the ethics of responsibility provides an alternative for both libertarian and communitarian ethics. According to Jonas the imperative of responsibility means caring for the beings involved in our actions. This imperative presents a basic non-reciprocal duty toward other beings, including non-human beings and future human beings. Jonas’ theory of responsibility has important similarities with Carol Gilligan’s understanding of female morality. Gilligan interprets the moral experience of women as an ethic of care that is contrasted with the male ethic of rights. A mature concept of responsibility should integrate the reverence for rights emphasized by men and the non-violence of care represented by women. Based on the psychological theory of attachment the responsible person can be characterized by the ability to take multiple perspectives and make optimal compromises across diverse value dimensions.
