Summary/Abstract: During the last decade, much more information has become available on antecedents and effects of engagement with school among all school-age children and adolescents. Data from national surveys and reports coming from educators suggest that students in various countries tend to show a general decline with respect to school authority and motivation for learning. Romania is no exception to this trend. In this paper, a brief introduction in the literature on student engagement in school activity will be made. Some data regarding the engagement with school among Romanian adolescents will also be presented. A negative public opinion about educational system can be advanced as a possible explanation for the decline in engagement with school among Romanian adolescents as well as poor results that high school students have obtained on national exams.
