Spelling of correlative diphthongs [ai], [ei] in the publication Epitome Historiae Sacrae with Lithuanian headlines and ...

Summary/Abstract: The spelling of diphthongs [ai], [ei] was explored in the publication Epitome Historiae Sacrae with Lithuanian headline Zodrodyje toie kningelieie essontiu żodiù of the article by Simonas Daukantas, which was published in Saint Petersburg in 1838. The article was based on Northern Samogitian subdialect of Kretinga inhabitants. It is ascertained that in the word Zodrodyje diphthongs [ai], [ei] are being spelt by <ai>, <ay>, <aj>, <ei>, <ey>, <éy>, <iey> and <éi> digraphs. A unisonous diphthong [ai] is uttered by single <a>, <ą>, <e>, <è>, <e’> or <ē> as well as by binary graphemes – <aa> and <ee>. Diphthong [ei] was monophthonged and marked as <e>, <ē> or <ee>. Digraphs <ai>, <aj>, <ei>, <eî> appered in Lithuanian headlines of the publication Epitome Historiae Sacrae. These digraphs were spelt as <a>, <a’>, <è>, <é>, <e’> while they were being monophthonged. Denotation of diphthongs [ai], [ei] by digraphs <aa>, <ee> (large amount of them were found in the ten initial pages of Zodrodys) and their unisonousing implied the writing of Zodrodys, which spelling is supposed to think was launched while concluding Prasma article writing. Whereas, headlines of publication Epitome Historiae Sacrae were translated afterwards, when the spelling of diphthongs [ai], [ei] of Upper Lithuania dialect had been established.
