Summary/Abstract: The article presents a short social history of the Lithuanian language in modern times. The declaration of the Lithuanian language the official language and the establishment of its functions as such was accompanied by various political and ideological hindrances due to historical reasons. World Baltists have always defended the rights of the Lithuanian language, with Vladimir Toporov playing an exceptional role. In the article entitled “Not a Gift, but a Right” he publicly upheld the right of Lithuanian to serve as the official language. A letter (an answer to this article), which was full of threats and curses, was discovered in his archives. All this shows that it took considerable courage to defend the Lithuanian language. The letter also shows what pressure was put on Lithuanian and its champions. It is presumed in the article that the Lithuanian language has been going through the posttraumatic shock syndrome ever since.
