NGO-ization of Feminism in Romania. The Failure of a Success

Summary/Abstract: The article looks at the Romanian women's movement in the context of the civic movement in general in an attempt to see why, beyond quantity, the impact of nongovernmental efforts to change practices and institutions was and still is low. The normative model of building democracy in Eastern Europe imposed by international community-its key words, language, priorities are critically discussed. Various proofs - from lived experiences of the author-leader of an women's NGO to a brief content analysis of certain documents are given in order to suggest that the marginalization and self marginalization of the women's movement within the civic movement continues.
