Summary/Abstract: The next NATO Summit, to take place in Chicago on 20–21 May 2012, was intended to be a “light-weight summit,” aimed at assessing progress in the implementation of decisions taken at the Lisbon Summit in November 2010, and, at best, providing further political guidance to the efforts initiated therein. At Lisbon, NATO Heads of State and Government approved a new Strategic Concept and agreed on an ambitious work programme focused on helping NATO deals with 21st century security challenges. They reemphasised the importance of Article 5 and mutual defence, confirmed preparing the ground for implementation of the transition process aimed at passing responsibility for Afghanistan’s security to Afghan hands, identified Missile Defence as a core mission for the Alliance and initiated a thaw in NATO-Russia relations.
