Summary/Abstract: Since its beginnings, the monastic life attracted scholars all over the world. The reason for this is the specific way of life (modus vivendi) which is based on three principles: obedience, poverty and chastity. This study analyses one of the least researched fields dealing with the names of monks. The name given in the ceremony of entering a monastic order is very significant and highly spiritual for monks, because it is believed that God always protects the “baptized”, even though many denominatives are registered. Apart from the numerous Orthodox corpus, this phenomenon was also analyzed in Catholicism, in Roman and Oriental rites.
