Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the iconographic motif and its transformation in the structure of the fictional text. The icon of St. martyr Mercurius of Smolensk is a visual and semantic dominant in I. Bunin’s story Suhodol. The version of Bunin’s realism is an integrating ability of memory, which determines both the non-linear character of narration and its fragmentation. The art of memory (ars memoria) turns into a conceptual status and acts as a strategy of view/writing
