Summary/Abstract: Post-war and more recent migration flows within and outside European borders produced important educational effects. As school population diversified, both policy-makers and educationalists have to face new challenges of designing and implementing appropriate educational policies and practices at European, national and institutional level. The present contribution summarizes main policy trends at the European level, as well as some selected national programs and provisions addressing the needs of children and youth with a migration background. Overall, two main educational policy trends are to be described: firstly, policies and programs developed in response to the needs of students with a migration background, and secondly, policies and programs addressing multi or intercultural education for all pupils, in an attempt to enhance cultural sensitivity at young ages. The paper concludes by formulating certain critiques on available provisions for this group of students at the European and national level, and by asking several open-ended questions and issues to be answered by future educational policies and practices.
