Summary/Abstract: The PRC's policy of opening to the western world represents one of the key events of the Cold War. Agreements with the United States gave an oportunity to China to emerge out of the shadow and to position itself on the international scene between the great powers. By cooperating with China, USA have strengthened its global positions, especially in Asia. Nixon's visit to China was a precedent in the Cold War, and the perspecitve of Yugoslav diplomacy was no less unique. At that moment Yugoslavia already had diplomatic relations both with USA and China, whereby its non-alligned position made it possible to have a specific insight in the affairs of the great powers. Due to the fact that it was neither on the American nor the Chinese side, Yugoslav diplomacy had a greater maneuvering space and the freedom of action, which gave it a potentital to adjust itself quickly and efficently to the dominant world trends.
