Summary/Abstract: The author of this present paper tries to summarize the main theoretical views regarding equivalence. . The so-called „traditional” translation studies with a linguistic approach have described and categorized the main and subtypes of equivalence by an amazingly complex terminology. The variety of terminology is misleading sometimes as it may cover useless and empty categories. According to the research in the analysis of literary translation the most useful concept of equivalence belongs to Werner Koller, therefore the presentation of his categories represents the central part of this paper. At the same time it cannot be forgotten that the author himself points out the imperfections of these categories and sets the limits of the analysis of literary translation. The present paper presents the combination of the linguistic approaches regarding the category of equivalence with the aspects of literary studies which could be useful in the analysis of literary translation.
