Oikonymy of the Republic of Mari El: the Gender Aspect (Structural Semantic Types of Anthroponymic Oikonyms)

Summary/Abstract: Gender issues are new for Mari linguistics. The article is focused on gender reference in anthroponymic oikonyms current in the Republic of Mari El. The material has been subjected to a systematic comparative analysis as to the male vs female reference. Statistics reveals a strong domination of the male over the female element, while the male-based oikonyms display considerably more of structural and expressive variety.
