The Question of Use and Its Scope. A Note on the Relation Between Manzoni and Ascoli

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze how the concept of linguistic use permits to define the thought of Alessandro Manzoni and Graziadio Isaia Ascoli about the problem of the linguistic unification in the Italian 19th century. The article tries to demonstrate that different manners to represent and conceptualize the complex geo-linguistic situation of Italy entail different approaches in linguistic policy. Therefore the reconstruction of the Manzoni - Ascoli debate gives us an interesting outlook on the roots of the puzzle of the linguistic unification in modern Italy.
