Summary/Abstract: Although not commanding a sufficient potential to pull the strings in the Western Balkans, Hungary does have enough clout to impact developments in that part of the continent. Budapest’s good position reflects its political and diplomatic engagement (enlargement process, missions), economic presence (direct investments) and historical ties. The effectiveness of Hungary’s policy is constrained by tough bilateral relations with Serbia, unimpressive trade figures and poor people-to-people contacts with most countries in the region.
