Summary/Abstract: One of the biggest problems that Lodz must have coped with during the First World War was the provisional problems and the increased level of hunger among citizens. Even in the first month of the War, people started opening so-called inexpensive beaneries, in which poorer citizens could receive a warm meal, being in majority of cases soup and a slice of bread for a small payment or for free. Those small establishments were created especially close to various professional and social organizations. Even though there were significant problems that beaneries must have coped with, they were extremely important and prevented thousands of people from dying due to starvation. It is estimated that even 80% of Lodz citizens took advantage of them.
