Summary/Abstract: In this paper I discuss the phenomenon of ethnonationalism and its relationship with ethnic identity in a way in which it diverges from the perception of a strong sense of ethnic identity linked to, (and sometimes equal to), ethnonationalism. Such a phenomenon results in being treated equally, which effectively suggests condemnation. By analyzing the structure of ethnic identity and the psychological nature of ethnonationalism, I argue for a necessary change in the perception of the relationship between ethnonationalism and ethnic identity, and suggest ways in which ethnic identity could be co-opted and used constructively in attempts to prevent the emergence and spread of the ethonationalist mentality and the problems it often causes ― thus better understanding and de-stigmatizing the issue altogether. The crux of the argument is that ethnic identity, especially its cultural content, has its adaptational functions which become obstructed in the presence of ethnonationalism. The reasons why ethonationalism could have unwanted consequences in relation to ethnic identity stem from its specific psychology shaped by its roots in authoritarian character and ethnocentrism, its establishment as a political group ideology and a strong presence of prejudice, a specific type of attitudes characterized by significant emotional saturation and resistance to change.
