Summary/Abstract: During the last century, many important changes related to small child care and maternity protection have been made in Polish legislation. In the 1920s, just after Poland regained independence, the first Social Assistance Act of was introduced. The state made a commitment to protect the most underprivileged groups (including children and labourers) and declared its readiness to support maternity by new law (establishing day nurseries in bigger factories). After World War II, in 1950s and 1960s, new family law was adopted to establish equal rights of men and women as well as equal rights of children from married and unmarried parents. New labour law for pregnant women and women with small children was enacted. Many governmental institutions for children in need were founded. In last few years a few important acts have come into effect: the Family Support and Substitute Care Act and the Act on Care of children under 3 years old. These acts are of significant importance for the current discussion about the ways to support families experiencing economic and social difficulties, as well as the ways to support those parents who decide to reconcile work and family life.
