Summary/Abstract: This article concerns the reception of the Aristotelian catharsis in present-day philosophical and literary-theoretical discourse. Roman Ingarden in A Marginal Commentary on Aristotle’s Poetics and Paul Ricoeur in Time and Story both strive at minimising the notion and proving it to be dysfunctional. The refutation of cognitive aspects of catharsis leads either to its aesthetisation (Ingarden) or to its depiction in ethical terms only (Ricoeur).
