Summary/Abstract: This article relates to Jill Bennett’s Empathic Vision: Affect, Trauma and Contemporary Art. Tabaszewska identifies and discusses some of the problems and theses of Bennett’s theory, focussing on contemporary art theory and practice. Tabaszewska discusses the relation between trauma and reality (‘the authenticity of trauma’); the social dimension of trauma; the corporeality of traumatic experience; and, finally, the interrelation between affect, trauma and empathy. Derived from artistic practice, Bennett’s theory reformulates the notion of empathy (empathy being a limitary experience, situated at the intersection of emotion and reason), evidencing that empathy, triggered by affect, is essential to the reception of contemporary art.
