Summary/Abstract: The author describes the evolution process of perceiving neighbours by the Polish people after 1989. He presents the complexity of the autostereotype of the Poles and the core values of their national identity, as well as slow changes in the perception of neighbours after the conclusion of basic agreements with Polish neighbours in 1991‒1994 and various signs of cooperation with individual countries. The Polish people positively assessed richer Western European countries and the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. They were most critical towards Russia, due to the past relations, imperial ambitions and authoritarian system of power in Moscow. The most signifi cant change concerned the opinions of the Poles on Germany. Shortly after the war, there were hostile Polish-German attitudes, which over time were heading towards a reconciliation of nations, and for several years the states have closely cooperated within NATO and the European Union.
