The Fantastic Element in the Heroic Epos

Summary/Abstract: The subject of this article is research on the essence and special features of the fantastic element as an inner inherent, specific feature of epic consciousness, which leads to a fantastic type of artistic image, characteristic of the epos. The author confirms the fact that the fantastic type of portrayal is basic in the poetic system of the Bulgarian heroic epos. The fantastic element appears in epic images, in epic actions in the dimensions of the epic time and space within the relationship of the epos to reality. The fantastic images are created in primitive thinking, in which they are the only way of summarizing and building up a complete picture of the world. The author accepts that the fantastic type of image is a genetic feature of the epos and not the product of subsequent changes. The realistic portrayal of historical personages and events is not characteristic of the Bulgarian heroic epos, regardless of the historical changeableness of the fantastic element and the attitude to it. The poetic system of the Bulgarian heroic songs reflects the changes which set in the many centuries of development and existence of the epos, succeeding, as it does, in including them in the structure of the songs through the fantastic type of artistic portrayal.
