Summary/Abstract: In the second half of the nineteenth century, in the context of the acceleration of the modernization process, the Transylvanian province went through fundamental changes. The study analyses the impact of modernity upon the Romanian community, from the perspective of the relation Church-community. For a traditional community like the Romanian one, the Church provided the only framework for community life, the priest representing a life model both in family relationships and for the relationship with political power and other state institutions. It is the culmination of secularization; on one hand the state trying to submit its authority, on the other, we are witnessing from the point of view of the Romanian national movement a transfer from ecclesiastical to the secular world. Therefore, for the Romanians living in the Habsburg Empire, the religious community was the great stake of modernity.
