Summary/Abstract: Disintegration of the system of cultural-educational associations (KPZ), which represented the foundations of the cultural policy in villages during socialism, resulted in absence of cultural policy strategies in the post-socialist context. Public events called “Village Gatherings,“ as one of the main cultural activities of KPZs in rural areas is proclaimed irrelevant and institutionally neglected. On the basis of the official and personal discourses of “Village Gatherings,“ this paper investigates differences between dominant discourse and personal narratives of the villagers about socialist cultural practices. The stories of participants and organizers challenge the dominant attitudes about state-sponsored public events in socialism as imposed and rigid public forms, illuminating the significance of these cultural practices in their everyday life strategies as important element of social cohesion.
