Summary/Abstract: Contemporary Serbian society is torn between the challenges imposed by the processes of modernization and retraditionalization. Many indicators show it is an anomic society with glaring contradictions. A neo-liberal model of dependent modernization has led to the marginalization of economy, society and culture. A study of a cultural subsystem, within the global system, is significant in many aspects. The devastation of this subsystem has had a negative impact both on socio-cultural integration of society, preservation of national identity and on the formation of developmental and emancipation potentials. In this paper the author criticizes a model of imitational dependency culture and discusses the needs and possibilities of defining a model of cultural policy during transition, which would enable a synthesis of traditional and modern values and would help to promote further development and freedom instead of new forms of slavery.
