Cultural model and cultural identity

Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the importance of cultural pattern and cultural identity in determining and conducting cultural policy. By emphasizing the differences between patterns of culture and cultural patterns the author questions the popular opinion that a cultural pattern has still not been created in Serbia, and that there have been no attempts to create it. An analysis of major periods in history determined by world wars shows that several cultural patterns were created in Serbia during the 20th century, but none of them was long-lasting. Radical changes led to cultural discontinuity and the forming of a lasting transitional phase which is mirrored in the insufficiently precise and often confusing Serbian identity.
