Summary/Abstract: The present paper shows how language and the written word function in discussions of gender—taking into consideration that two instances of language, the written word, converged to energize and the founders of the Women’s Studies Program at UDM Mercy: one, a word in the Magnificat of Mary, translated by a scripture scholar not as a “lowly” handmaiden of the Lord, but as a “violated” one, which set up both serious academic discussion and an uproar among conservative Catholics, and second, a list posted on the refrigerator door of a fraternity, of young frosh women athletes to be bedded by the young men of the frat.
