Summary/Abstract: The present article1 focuses not only on the writings of canonical women writers (Sofia Nadejde, Veronica Micle, Elena Farago)2 but also on a number of writers who were neglected by critics (Eugenia Ianculescu de Reuss, Constanţa Hodoş, Bucura Dumbravă, Emilia Lungu, Adela Xenopol, Constanţa Marino-Moscu, Smaranda Gheorghiu); or who wrote their work in foreign languages (Iulia Hasdeu, Martha Bibescu, Elena Văcărescu, Dora d’Istria, Bucura Dumbravă) or the queens (Elisabeta de Neuwied, Queen of Romania and Marie of Romania (Marie Alexandra Victoria, previously Princess Marie of Edinburgh). The article assesses their achievement by examining their late 19th century cultural impact on women’s changing social status and diversification and the reshaping of their lives.
