Summary/Abstract: The female protagonists of the movies Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) and Eat, Pray, Love (2010) find themselves at an emotional crossroads after they go through the painful experience of divorce. Both decide to travel first to Italy, a place where they hope to find the necessary comfort to recover, and, as they travel, the physical journeys turn into emotional and spiritual quests for self-discovery. The various spaces they inhabit prompt them to interrogate traditional gender roles and expectations, in an attempt to understand their female identities. Thus, this paper examines the protagonists’ quests for self-discovery, as they ponder on such issues as the significance of marriage, relationships, family, home, and love.
