Summary/Abstract: The representation of women in Romanian politics is one of the lowest in Europe: 9%, according to European Committee statistics. Meanwhile research proved a tight relation between mass communication and gender identity, setting the active role for mass-media in the process of gender socialization. Further analysis revealed that Romanian media discourse continues to promote gender stereotypes and portrays women in traditional patterns, sex or family related, not as actively participating in the public, thus political sphere. All these considered, the article is an attempt to shortly explore some of the concepts and terms used in gender and media studies, in regard to the media effects on the formation of individual identity and acknowledgement of social and gender roles.
